On Friday, 8th November 2024, Lloyd Institute of Management & Technology (Pharm.), in collaboration with Yatharth Hospital, organized an informative awareness session on Thalassemia. This session aimed to raise awareness about Thalassemia, its impact on patients and families, and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment options.
The session was led by Dr. Major Ravi Shankar, an esteemed Consultant in Haemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), who has extensive experience in treating blood disorders. Dr. Shankar provided in-depth insights into the genetic nature of Thalassemia, explaining its transmission, symptoms, and the types of Thalassemia, including Thalassemia Minor and Major.
He discussed current treatments, including regular blood transfusions and bone marrow transplantation, and recent advancements in gene therapy.
Dr. Shankar stressed the importance of premarital and prenatal screening to reduce the prevalence of Thalassemia. He highlighted the significance of community awareness and support networks to help families cope with the emotional and financial challenges of managing Thalassemia.
