Introduction

The 5-Day Short Term Certification Course on Medical Coding was successfully conducted from 8th July to 12th July 2024 in collaboration with CodEvo Academy at Lloyd. This program aimed to equip participants with the foundation knowledge and practical skills required for medical coding, a crucial aspect of healthcare administration.

Course Objective

  • Understanding Medical Terminology: Equip students with the medical vocabulary and terminology required to understand healthcare
  • Learning Coding Systems: Teach the primary coding systems used in healthcare, such as ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases), CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), and HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System).
  • Familiarizing with Healthcare Documentation: Provide knowledge on how to interpret and abstract relevant information from medical records, charts, and other
  • Understanding Healthcare Regulations: Educate students on healthcare laws, regulations, and ethical considerations related to medical coding and
  • Preparing for Certification: Prepare students for certification exams, such as those offered by the AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) or AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association).

Participants

 

The course was attended by 81 participants, including students & faculty members of different colleges, healthcare professionals, and administrative staff. The diverse group ensured a rich learning experience, with participants bringing various perspectives to the sessions.

Course Structure

The course was divided into five modules, each covering different aspects of medical coding.

Day 1: The World of Health Care (05 Hrs.)

  • Daily activities in US medical facilities
  • Responsibilities of Medical coders and Billers,
  • Career opportunities available to medical coding and billing specialists
  • Medical Ethics- Confidentiality with Medical Records
  • Insurances and Legal Concepts Involved
  • Medical Terminology: suffix, prefix, Abbreviations, Symbols, and Special Terms
  • Documentation of Medical Records
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology

Day 2: Diagnostic Coding (05 Hrs.)

  • Introduction to Diagnostic Coding
  • ICD-10 CM Coding Manual Introduction
  • Diagnosis Coding Procedures
  • Module ICD- 10-CM Coding from Infections to Blood Diseases
  • Coding of endocrine, nutritional, metabolic, and blood diseases Coding, Mental Disorders to the Respiratory System, nervous, circulatory, respiratory system, Pregnancy, Perinatal Period, Musculoskeletal system, congenital
  • Coding from Symptoms to Complications
  • Coding for injuries
  • Poisoning

Day 3: CPT Coding (05 Hrs.)

  • Differentiate between CPT and HCPCS codes
  • Format of the CPT coding manual &
  • Basic steps of CPT coding
  • CPT Coding for Anesthesia, Radiology, Pathology and Medicine
  • CPT Coding from the integumentary system

In this module helps the learner to understand codes related to the Integumentary System Coding Biopsies, skin lesions, excisions, burns, breast procedures and skin grafts

Day 4 (05 Hrs.)

  • CPT Coding from the Musculoskeletal system, cardio-pulmonology system, Digestive system, Reproductive Systems to the Operating Microscope Procedures related to the endocrine, nervous, Visual, and auditory systems, and nervous system.

Day 5 (05 Hrs.)

  • CPT Coding Evaluation and Management Services
  • Documentation guidelines and evaluation
  • Management level sections and modifiers
  • Comprehensive CPT Evaluation and Management

HCPCS Coding

  • Associations, websites, continuing education, and certification options
  • Importance of Coding Charges and Research
