Industrial Visit: IPC

Event Name : Industrial Visit: IPC Event Date : 27th November 2024
Organized by : Lloyd Institute of Management and Technology (LIMT) Participants : M. Pharm students and faculty members of LIMT

Objective of the Visit:

The purpose of the visit was to enhance the understanding of students about the standard-setting processes for drugs and pharmaceuticals in India, familiarize them with the functioning of the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, and gain insights into the regulatory and quality control aspects of the pharmaceutical industry.

About IPC:

Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) is an autonomous Institution of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. IPC was created on January 01, 2009, and entrusted with the mandate to set standards for drugs in the country. IPC’s basic function is to regularly update the standards of drugs for their

Publication in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP). IP Reference Standards (IPRS) and Impurities are also developed by the IPC for the quality control analysis of drugs.

Details of the Visit:

The M. Pharm students, accompanied by faculty members, were welcomed by the officials of IPC. The visit was structured into several segments to provide a comprehensive overview of the Commission’s operations and responsibilities.

  1. Introduction to IPC:

The visit began with a detailed presentation by IPC representatives, highlighting its role as the national standard-setting body for pharmaceuticals in India. Key aspects discussed included:

  • Preparation and revision of the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP).
  • Functions of the National Coordination Centre (NCC) for Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI).
  • Quality standards and analytical methods for drugs.
  1. Tour of the Laboratories:

The students were guided through the state-of-the-art analytical and quality control laboratories. They witnessed demonstrations of various sophisticated instruments such as:

  • High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
  • Gas Chromatography (GC)
  • UV-Visible Spectrophotometers
  • Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy

These instruments are integral to ensuring the safety and efficacy of drugs in compliance with pharmacopoeial standards.

  1. Pharmacovigilance Insights:

A session was dedicated to explaining the operations of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI). Students learned about the collection, monitoring, and assessment of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) to ensure patient safety.

  1. Interactive Session:

An engaging Q&A session allowed students to interact with IPC scientists and regulatory experts. Queries related to the formulation of standards, testing protocols, and career opportunities in the regulatory sector were addressed.

Key Takeaways:

  • Academic Enrichment: The visit bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, providing students with real-world insights into drug standardization and pharmacovigilance.
  • Awareness: Students gained a deeper understanding of IPC’s pivotal role in ensuring drug quality and public health.
  • Skill Development: Exposure to advanced analytical techniques and regulatory procedures inspired students to explore career opportunities in quality control and regulatory affairs.

Conclusion:

The industrial visit to the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission proved to be an enriching experience for the M. Pharm students of Lloyd Institute of Management and Technology. It provided a valuable platform to connect academic concepts with industry practices, fostering a better understanding of the pharmaceutical regulatory landscape.

Acknowledgment:

The students and faculty express their gratitude to IPC for their hospitality and to LIMT for organizing this educational trip, which will undoubtedly contribute to the professional growth of the students.
